Subject Oil Painting
Do you have any tried and true oil painting tips and techniques?

I am going to oil paint for the first time in years, and am wondering what tips and techniques anyone may have to offer. I have been illustrating in pencil and pen and ink as a hobby, along with colored pencils, but it has just been a long time since I have painted. The subject matter varies with me, from still life, people and scenery, to fantasy and science fiction/ cosmic scenery type themes. Any ideas, tips, suggestions, etc., are greatly welcome. Thanks!!

My best advice - always "fat over lean" - of course you will remember that that means light layers of paint first - allow to dry - then apply paint more thickly for each additional layer.
If you reverse this process - as the 'lean' layer dries - it will shrink and this will affect the drying 'fat' layers underneath - giving you big ugly cracks in your painting.
That - and always clean your brushes properly - dip them in linseed oil to condition - then in a dilute carpenters glue solution to 'set' them so they're ready for the next project.
The most important tip of all - love your project... and have fun.
