Korean Boxwoods - Are They Death Proof?
Boxwood's are a great contribution to a formal garden landscape. They really can be shaped into almost any design your heart can think of. They are also great performers in the garden, looking lush and green year round even in a northern climate. It's not a secret that you will have some care and maintenance with your boxwoods. These couple of steps will keep your boxwoods' perfect all year:
1. Avoid a mix and match boxwood hedge. If you have a boxwood hedge that needs replacement it is totally possible to have issue finding the exact same replacement to what you already got. For this scenario, look for a variation with a similarity in the branch. Boxes come in many different colors of green-so definitely look at what you have and what the nursery has and make some choices based on what will look good together. Over and above the ending results could be getting mixed variety looks which include: pale colored greens with darker colored greens, not to mention also the sizing variations!
2. Each area is different, so doing some research before constructing your new hedge designs is solid advice. Find a box that's a hardy, resistant to illness and disease, drought tolerant breed.The Korean Boxwood, for example, grows very fast and in the northern climates is resistant to disease.
3. The third thing to discuss here is getting about a half of a cup (per plant) of nice acidic (organic please) fertilizer that has peat, compost, dehydrated manuer and some of that special evergreen food and get it all around the bases of your boxwoods. Ignoring the needs of the root systems leads to issues, so each season check them and add the needed compost to help protect, replenish and ensure their safety.
4. There are a few rules to live by when pruning your boxs', but for the most part it is pretty straight forward. Always be sure to let new spring growth harden off before you have your boxes first hair cut of the year and never prune them late in the fall. Fall pruning will encourage new tender growth which will turn brown in the spring and look dead for a few months before the new fresh growth come in. Since boxes are a kind of winter interest plant it is bad form to have big dead brown splotches in them. Most would agree having dead boxwoods is worse than having a little shag going on.
5. A shallow root system on boxwoods typcially leads to them browning out rather quickly. With that, never forget to mulch your boxs'. Doing so guards the root system and maintains a moisture retention. Shy away from mulch over-kill as you could very well wind up killing your boxwoods due to bark rot from buried bases. All things in moderation is a dandy code to live by even in your garden.
6.Keep an eye peeled for diseases and fungus problems on your boxwoods. Typically hardy, boxwoods still may be subject to shrub issues. If you are you're thinking that the problems with your boxwoods is disease and not just winter damage then you'll want to do a bit of simple investigation first. Most diseases can be easily cured with a fungicide spray or an oil soap spray depending on what you are dealing with: mold or insect. For heavens sake (and the planets') figure out the core issue prior to getting our the store bought toxic remedies. When all else seems hopeless, simply replace the bush that's causing troubles immediately. Even though a single bush replacement is fairly cheap, it's when you have to replace the whole hedge that things get to be more expensive.
