Gems Located When Cleaning Out The House
Sitting at the kitchen table over a cup of coffee, the three of us made plans. The funeral had been this afternoon and everyone had left except us. We had decisions to make about the house and all the possessions of moms that were in it. It was all up to us three girls.
We all worked different shifts so we split up the work and decided to meet back here on Saturday to begin going through the house There was a lot to do as mom had collected a lot of stuff over the years. Going through this was enough to make you go home and toss your own house.
With boxes, garbage bags and cleaning supplies in hand, we each started on a different room. Where was my head, I had started in the bathroom! Jewelry was laying everywhere. Many pieces were on the sink counter. Here was a piece I remembered. Mom wore it a lot; it must have been a favorite. A beautiful crystal necklace, it sparkled in the sunlight that was peeking through the bathroom window. Remembering those good times, I placed the necklace to the side and went on to the next item.
I was almost done with the bathroom when my younger sister Jessica came in grinning from ear to ear. Carrying two hobo bags she asked if I was interested in having them. That bag was definitely not my style. Happily she let me know that she was keeping them. She had found her riches for the day. She went back to what she had been doing as I finished up the bathroom.
Moving on I decided to tackle the kitchen. I separated the food in three boxes for us to share. The dishes were being sent to the church mom went to, along with other household items that none of us girls wanted. The small appliances we would all go through first to see who would want what. The pans were going home with me. I was in need of a new set and while hers were not new they were a good set that would last me for years.
We had been working for a couple hours when Jessica came wandering out with a single brown boot in her hand. Had either of us run across its mate? No, Doris nor I had seen it. Placing it on the table, Jess instructed us to keep our eyes peeled for the matching boot.
Having finished a lot, we were tired at the end of the day. Something to remind us of mom was going home with each one of us. Agreeing to meet again later in the week, we realized that we were beginning to bond on this new journey in our life. Working together we would make it through this trial.
