Paris Hotels: A Little Monet Goes A Long Way
Paris hotels afford their guests numerous opportunities to explore the cities and countryside around the French capital. Leave the city behind for a day or two and discover more about this country.
To the west of Paris is Monet’s Garden in the small village of Giverny. There are regular organised coach tours from the centre of Paris, or, if you would prefer to avoid the crowds, there is a quick train service to Vernon from Gare Saint-Lazare. Monet painted some of his most famous works in the garden at Giverny, having moved there in 1883 and living at the house until his death in 1926. An absolutely breathtaking sight, be sure to get plenty of rest at one of the Paris hotels before embarking on this unforgettable adventure.
Famed for its impressive chateaux and delicious wines, the Loire Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty and incredibly rich cultural heritage. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the valley is dotted with many world-famous castles including the Chateaux d’Amboise, Chateau de Villandry and Chenonceau. The Loire is a fair distance from the capital, so you’ll either have to set off early from Paris hotels if you want to get a full day’s sightseeing in or book a hotel room in one the charming towns in the region, such as Saumur or Orleans.
Strasbourg can be reached within two and a half hours by train. The city is home to the European Court of Human Rights and Parliament, and the UNESCO World Heritage site listed Grande Ile, with its rich heritage retaining traces of its German as well as its French past. The luxury spa town of Baden Baden, where the England football team stayed during the 2006 World Cup, is just over the border and worth visiting if you’re staying in Strasbourg for a few days.
Also close to Paris are the sites of the D-Day invasion in Normandy. Visit the battlefields and pay your respects at the site of the largest invasion of military history. There are many tours to choose from or make your own way there and discover what life really was like for soldiers in the Second World War.
Located approximately 20km from Paris is one of the most popular destinations for a day trip, the Palace of Versailles. Commissioned by Louis XIV in the 17th Century, it is a fine example of baroque detailing, opulent extravagance – check out the Hall of Mirrors – and above all else, astounding architecture. A short bus, train or drive away, this is a popular day trip from the capital.
