A Conversation About Photography
A week before the autumn officially came my family and I invited some relatives to joint our mini BBQ celebration at our beautiful backyard. As the host, my wife was busy with the grill, the Cuisinart CGG180 gas-grill and I was also very busy taking pictures of every attendees when my son suddenly gave a question to me. “Where is the best place in the world to take picture?”
His question, eventhough sounds simple made me speechless for two or three seconds in front of everyone but after that quietness I told him there are so many beautiful locations throughout the entire galaxy where we can take a picture at. Then I stressed to him that almost every country in the world have their great places and remarkable places to be used as photo location. At the end I also added, an ordinary place like a market, an old building, a bridge, a news kiosk, even a dying tree can also looks great in a picture.
Later at night I deliberately grab him, took to the sofa and showed my photo collections, the very best of mine, and explained to him how I got them. First I showed the greatest collections of mine, taken in Tibet. The scene was at a traditional equestrian festival in Lhasa, showing the excitement of the target-shooting event and by the colorful costumes of the nomads. What made me amazed, until now, one of my pictures caught the arrow at the exact instant the archer released it –so sharp and in good position.
Next I showed him beautiful pictures collection I took when I rode down the Li River in Guilin, China with a boat owned by a local fisherman. But what make my son opened his mouth was the next series of photo taken in a peasant neighborhood of Ankara, Turkey. At that time I spotted a little boy in the doorway then I stopped to strike up a conversation before I took his picture.
I knew my son was so excited to hear my story, as well as looking at the pictures. Before stepping into the bed he asked, “so when will I start making picture, dad?”
I smiled because I was all-set to hear his question so I calmly answered, “pretty soon, son.”
I did not mean to lie or boast. To be frank with you, one of the reasons why I finally decided to buy the newly introduced Nikon 1 J1 is to help him when he wants to learn how to use a camera. Anytime I really need to print-out the picture, I can simply insert the memory card into my all-in-one printer, the Epson WorkForce 840.
