Adam Smith, founder of modern economics wrote an entire book disproving these mercantile views.
'Gusher of lies' also explores the myth of energy independence. It is ridiculous for us to think we can be independent of mid east oil but politicians always talk about energy independence.
Economic fallacies, sigh.
My statements do not contradict each other.
I always heard the word 'energy independence' being discussed in the presidential debates. On both sides.
V for Vendetta, they are not capitalists they are mercantilistic.

Well what if Mcdonalds stopped selling us fast-food?
What if Walmart refused to sell us goods?
They won't do that. They rely on our money just as much s we need their oil.
Well, what if Iraq and Iran etc stopped selling the US oil. Then there wouldn't be enough. That's why they think that.
EDIT: "They wouldn't do that" is all you've got? Why not? Becase you said so? Sorry but your question is now a complete failure. The US has no business being there and stealing oil, but there are geopolitical realities that necessitate the US presence and they are A) poor planning - dependence on a substance that mainly comes from a region the US has pissed on for years, B) angry people - people who have been pissed on and are pissed off enough to disrupt flow (they have donr it before by the way), and C) if they cut off the oil it will hurt them no doubt, but it will hurt them a lot less than the US and they're more willing to do it as they know aside from getting a few suicide bombers through customs it's their best play for revenge.
