I bought a sketch at a flea market, how do I find out if it's original and what it's worth?
I bought a sketch at a flea market, it appears to be original ink on paper, signed "David Tzur, 1966 Israel" (the "U" is drawn in a "V" shape). Although it's matted in a nice frame, the paper it's drawn on appears to have been folded, or rolled, and there's a small stain on the right side. I paid 15 dollars for it. How do I find out if it is original? How do I find out what it's worth? How do I find more information on the artist? A Google search reveals that he's a concentration camp survivor who emigrated to Israel, then taught art, but not much else is available on the internet.
You can take it to an art appraiser/dealer. Look one up in the yellow pages, or visit a local museum. Make Sure you tell the person who appraises it that you are Not interested in selling it (even if you are). If they think you might sell it to them, they will tell you that it is worth less than it is.
Don't settle on the first opinion you recieve. Ask around, get as many as you can. Then you will have to do your best to sift through the garbage and find the truth. At least they should be able to tell you how old it is, which can give you an idea of whether it is original.
