CHOOSING THE RIGHT INK CARTRIDGE
Information is power, and when it comes to choosing ink cartridges, knowing what the similarities and differences between the various types in terms of page yield, print quality, cost, reliability and environmental impact are, will help you make your choices.. No one type of cartridge is definitively the ‘right’ one to use, but rather there are different types that are suited to individual circumstances and needs.
There are basically three types of replacement cartridges, namely original equipment manufacturer (OEM) ones, compatible cartridges (generics) and remanufactured or refurbished cartridges. Most online cartridge retailers supply all three types of cartridge – and often at a more reasonable cost than at regular office or computer supply stores.
Original equipment manufacturer cartridges (OEM)
As the name implies, these are original, genuine products. These carry the brand name of the manufacturer (the printer company) or their licenced partner, such as HP, Canon, Brother etc. They are high quality, but are also the most expensive option.
Some people still believe that if they don’t use OEM ink cartridges, they will compromise the warranties on their printers, but this has been proved in law that this isn’t the case.
Compatible ink cartridges
These are unbranded cartridges which are manufactured to OEM specifications by third parties. They are primarily made from new components, but the packaging will state the exact make-up of the cartridge.
They can retail at up to half or a third of the cost of OEM cartridges, but users need to check that they are fully compatible with their printer model otherwise problems could arise. It's worth asking a cartridge retailer for their views and news on generics and which ones are the preferred choices. Consumers should exercise caution when selecting generics to ensure compatibility.
{Remanufactured (refurbished) cartridges}
These are genuine OEM cartridges that are refilled by authorised organisations after having been used – they are thoroughly cleaned, tested, parts replaced where necessary and refilled with the same ink formulation – and then released back to market. Remanufacturers can be certified by the International Standardisation Organisation (ISO), so the quality is guaranteed.
From a cost perspective, these are cheaper than OEM cartridges but more expensive than compatible cartridges – plus they are an environmentally friendly choice.
Refilled printer cartridges
Empty cartridges can also be refilled. An alternative is to purchase a ink-filling kit that you can use at home. This method is cheap but also risky. It can be very messy, time-consuming and the results are not always consistent or satisfactory
Understanding the differences between the different types of new and used ink and toner cartridges is invaluable, say Perth cartridge supplier, Printerfuel.. Taking a bit of time to inspect the packaging to ensure the origins of the cartridge are authentic will save headaches later. Cheap isn’t always best – and sometimes it’s better to spend a little more to get a lot more.
