how much should i ask for my 12x12 original acrylic painting?

i have been making these paintings on canvas with acrylic and im trying to figure out how much i should ask for them. (columbus, ohio area)

Sounds like you haven't approached any galleries or tried to sell before?
I'm not sure what level of experience you have... posting a pic would be good.

Essentially, you can assign a price that you think is fair... but too many unestablished artists are asking way too much for their work. You have start pretty low if you're just getting started - without prior sales, there is no precedent for assigning a higher price to your work.

You might shoot for $50 - $75 and see what happens. A rule of thumb might be to establish that you can sell 8-10 pieces at a particular price, then, incrementally raise the price for the next ten.

Another rule of thumb might be to establish that you can sell half your work every 6 months.

As you get serious about approaching galleries, you'll want to have a bunch of your best pieces finished (like 15-20 of the best), have professional photos taken and put onto a CD or slides, have a professional-looking portfolio, an artist's statement, a slide list (with the materials, dimensions, etc. in correct format - there's a preferred professional format for this), and hopefully have established a history of prior sales (documented, provable).

Just a sidebar, have you considered working in oils? Also, you should be using the best quality canvases available, like 2" gallery-wrapped, preferably stretching yourself.

Cheap canvases and acrylics for fine art tend to feel a little amateurish (just my experience or perception).
