Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony: Could You Win Them All?
Winning these 4 awards - the most prestigious in show industry - is often termed as “the Grand Slam of entertainment.” The achievement (and also the particular person which achieves it) also might be called EGOT (or at times by another acronym, GATE, which stands for Grammy, Academy, Tony, Emmy). An EGOT is regarded as a celebrity who has earned fame by generating work of substance and reputation (or at least popularity among peers, which each and every of the awards measures).
Only ten individuals in history have won all four honours. Five are actors (4 of them females): John Gielgud (his Oscar was for his duty as the butler within the first film of Arthur, with Dudley Moore), Whoopi Goldberg, Helen Hayes (who won an Oscar for the disaster film Airport), Audrey Hepburn (from Breakfast at Tiffany’s), and Rita Moreno (Anita in West Side Story). The other 5 EGOT or GATE winners contain three composers and two directors. Among the directors, Mike Nichols (whose films include Birdcage and the Graduate), certainly is the champ within the Grand Slam list, having a total of 14 awards across all four categories. The very first to win all four was composer Richard Rodgers (whose credits include The Sound of Music, The King and I, and South Pacific).

What do these people possess in common? Patterns can be difficult to detect. Not all started out on Broadway, as an example. Some did, but the rest came to the stage fairly late in their careers. Some, but not all, had formal training in their craft.
In many other techniques, as well, this is usually a diverse group with relatively really little in common except the truth that they may be amongst the “group of 10” who've won all four awards.
However, when you look more closely, you'll be able to see that these ten extremely unique men and women share two oh-so-obvious but oh-so-rare qualities: talent and dedication. Look in the body of work of each for these people. They had their share of duds (as an example, EGOT John Gielgud appeared from the X-rated Caligula created by Penthouse founder Bob Guccione), but they also had a track record of innovation of taking chances and of executing high-quality work even in the lower-quality pieces with which they were being involved. With regard to dedication, you can see in each EGOT’s career plenty of work. None was an overnight wonder, plucked from obscurity and catapulted into stardom. Every actor auditioned and didn’t often win the role. Each composer worked and reworked their songs. Every director worked in other factors of the craft-onstage or backstage. Each and every of group of ten been working hard and for years. (It took Rita Moreno 16 years to win all 4 awards and she did it sooner than anybody else in the group of ten).
There's lots of proficient people (60 in all) who have won 3 but not four awards. And there are people who've won all four awards but not all in “competitive” categories (for example Barbra Streisand, who won a “special” Tony but not in a competitive category and is therefore technically not deemed an EGOT). However the group of 10 hasn’t had an addition ever since 2002.
Think you're a potential EGOT? Whether you begin as an actor or singer, dancer or director. Regardless of whether you start on stage, on film, on record, or on TV. Do you have the talent? The dedication? Do you find yourself ready to audition? To take probabilities? To try and try again, and retry until you acquire the Grand Slam?
