How to oil painting without any reference available?

Apart from painting still-life, landscape or portrait images where you have a reference source, how do i start fantasy oil painting without actually having people or objects to pose for me while i'm working on it? do i have to use my own imagination and years of experience or natural talent to reach such level?

i use a lot of cutouts i find in magazines, etc. i cruise the internet for interesting images as well and when i paint (im a professional artist) i just go thru my piles of references. i have also put a lot of my finds in large binders so i can quick reference for something-for example : insects, birds, dolls, clothing, cars, vintage toys...etc. I know many professional artists and we all use lots of references!!! the creative part comes when you change the reference image itself as you transfer it to your canvas or panel or whatever.
