The Reasons Behind Seizures In Dogs And Current Treatment
Diagnosing the reasons that a pet may be experiencing a seizure is half the problem. Every type of seizure is not necessarily related to epilepsy like most of us commonly believe. There are a variety of reasons for seizures in dogs, and it they can be linked to a variety of diseases or even household products.
In both humans and canines, epilepsy is the number one cause of this disorder, and that is why it is always the first to come up. Epilepsy itself is actually a neurological disorder and related to brain tissue that is abnormal. This abnormal brain tissue signals the muscles to respond, and we then see movements of twitching or convulsions.
It has been researched and found that genetics can play a significant role with the likelihood in development of the problem. Certain breeds are much more likely than others to develop the disorder. Some breeds that have been included in the list to be aware of are the Beagle, Collie, Golden Retriever, Poodle, German Shepherd, and Dachshund.
A brain tumor is another issue that may be responsible for the disorder, and can be linked to specific types of seizures. It is quite possible for a tumor to apply pressure to specific points in the brain of a canine. The pressure applied to specific brain tissue can then result in particular types of this disorder which cause loss of coordination, and may even cause some loss of vision.
Accidents that result in head injuries for canines can also be the cause for this type of disorder. An accident that causes serious injury to the cranium or brain tissue is likely to result in a seizure. It is possible for the episodes to continue after the recovery of the pet.
Products in the environment can also be hazardous to canines and may end up causing the disorder. Many products that are used for cleaning, painting, and other everyday chores can be extremely harmful. Also, certain foods such as chocolate are extremely dangerous for many canines, especially those that are prone to the disorder.
Diseases and parasites also present a threat, and can result in this disorder for canines. Distemper in canines is an extremely dangerous virus that is very contagious attacking the pet at their nervous system. Seizures are most often present in the early stages, but have also presented in the latter stages as well.
Another disease that can result by your pet being bitten by a tick is called Lyme disease, and the most common symptom is that of arthritis, but seizures are also possible. By treating your canine with the proper medication on a regular basis this can be prevented. Medications are available online with a proper prescription from your veterinarian to treat your pets for flea and tick prevention on a monthly basis.
It is impossible to protect our pets from everything that they may face in life, but we can protect them against some very serious problems. Proper vaccinations and parasite protection can help them fight disease and this disorder. Seizures in dogs can be prevented in some cases and certainly do not have to keep your pet from living a long healthy life.
