I have a painting by the artist C. Cooper, does anyone know this artist?
Ok I purchased an oil painting when I was in the Dominican Republic on vacation about 5 years ago that was signed C. Cooper. I can't for the life of me find who this artist is even when I google him. The artwork is absolutely amazing! It's a Beautiful Oil painting on canvas with very bright colors that is almost abstract in a way. Everyone who see's it says it reminds them of a picasso. This painting was around 100 when I purchased it in Dominican and was very different than the other traditional paintings you see in the Dominican. I just want to know if any one has heard of the artist or has any work from this artist and if this type of art is possibly worth anything.
If you bought a Painting Signed by someone named C. Cooper in the Dominican Republic chances are you bought what is known in the trade as a 'tourist' painting. 'Tourist' paintings are done in artist painting factories usually in Eastern Europe or Central America. The artists who whip out these 'tourist' or 'decoration art' paintings are paid by the painting (for very little money by our standards) and they aren't allowed to use their own real names. Most of them are assigned European or English sounding names to sign the paintings with. Do you think the name Cooper sounds like a native Dominican Republic last name? Anyway, because they aren't allowed to use their real names it's very unlikely you'll ever find out who actually painted your painting. You can't find out any information on-line about the artist because he or she doesn't paint under their real name.
This does not mean that the painting you bought isn't a great painting or isn't very fine art or isn't unique in some way. Some of the artist who do those tourist paintings are pretty damn good artists. It simply means that it will have very little value to a knowledgeable art collector.
But what should be important is the value of the art to the owner and viewer. As long as you love it then it's priceless to you.

The Shop, an artists' cooperative located on the top floor of the Fead Building in Port Huron, will celebrate the opening of its gallery at 6 p.m. June 24. The gallery and cooperative are at 1300B Whipple St. In addition to featured works by the cooperative's members, the opening will feature entertainment and music.
