Promoting Culture in British Columbia
British Columbia is devoted to the promotion of culture within its provincial borders. The government of this Canadian region ensures those who make intellectual contributions to the society are recognized for their gifts. Thus, the province has established the British Columbia Achievement Foundation to celebrate the achievements of community members.
The British Columbia Achievement Foundation recognizes cultural excellence by giving out nine categories of awards annually. Perhaps the most cherished of these honors is the BC Community Achievement Award. This past year, forty-five individuals received this award. They were nominated by their peers chosen based upon steps they have taken to improve their communities. This includes major contributions to sports, multiculturalism, volunteerism, youth leadership, and more. Recipients must also have received at least two letters of support from people who have worked with them.
Two of the British Columbia Achievement Foundation’s awards focus specifically on promoting literacy within the province. One of these is British Columbia’s National Award for Canadian Non-Fiction. This is one of the most prominent literary prizes in all of Canada. Each year, one author receives this honor for his or her contribution to the genre of non-fiction writing. The most recent winner was Lorna Goodson, who was honored for her compelling memoir of her family.
The other literary award granted by the British Columbia Achievement Foundation is the Time to Read Award for early literacy. The recipient of this honor receives $15,000 for his or her exceptional piece of children’s literature. To ensure children have access to this honored piece of literature, the BC Ministry of Education will ensure every kindergarten student in the province receives a copy.
British Columbia also recognizes the artistic achievements of its citizens. Here, the definition of art is very broad. For example, recent recipients of the British Columbia Creative Achievement Award included a jewelry maker, fashion designer, ceramicist, and even an industrial designer. Meanwhile, The Joseph Plaskett Award provides a graduate student from British Columbia with $25,000 for a painting fellowship. Finally, British Columbia also offers a separate Creative Achievement Award for contributions to aboriginal art. These are given to artists from the BC First Nations who express their community ideals through art.
As you can see, British Columbia is truly committed to cultural promotion. It’s awards help inspire people to contribute to their community and the nation of Canada as a whole. Thus, the British Columbia Achievement Foundation is a model organization that other provinces, and even other nations, should strive to follow.
