One never knows if one is exposed to the risk of developing diabetes or not and just carries on with the daily routine of life. The signs are very subtle and show up without one even noticing it. Diabetes has been around for a long time but is gaining eminence in recent times. If left undetected or untreated it progresses rapidly and is a potential killer. At the same time if attention is paid when there are certain indications of physical malfunction then it can be arrested in its footsteps, controlled and even prevented from causing severe complications.

The word "diabetes" instills a fear in the mind when uttered. In reality, it is a controllable disease but requires a lot of cooperation from the diabetic. Upon diagnosis the patient's world comes crashing down, a very natural reaction but one must grab a hold of oneself in order to be on the winning side. A positive attitude takes one a long way so be encouraged. Early symptoms of diabetes are generally very mild and go unnoticed. But when there is something amiss then it is necessary to take action immediately.

Warning signs of the presence of the disease are as follows and not to be neglected, frequent urination (especially at night), unusual weight loss or gain, vomiting, nausea, tingling, burning sensation in the hands or feet, blurry vision, extreme thirst, increased hunger, slow healing wounds, recurring bladder and vaginal infections, dark, velvety patches on the skin, fatigue and tiredness. Children complain of pain in the abdomen. Diabetes attacks any age group male or female not sparing the animals as well. It has been categorized into three types namely Type 1 or Juvenile Diabetes, Type 1 diabetes and Gestational diabetes.

The malfunction of the pancreas is the origin of diabetes. When the pancreas fails to produce the sufficient amount of a hormone called insulin or none at all, then the downfall begins. Insulin is essential for the conversion of glucose into energy; this energy is used by the body for daily functions. This deficiency causes the blood sugar level to rise as the glucose keeps collecting in the bloodstream as it cannot enter the body cells. If the signs are not attended to quickly then it will lead to severe kidney damage, blindness, heart disease and irreparable nerve damage. Many times nerve damage leads to gangrene and amputations. The feet also face the risk of damage.

Diabetes, if taken care of in its early stages can be handled if proper care is taken by the diabetic him or herself. A normal, healthy diet that includes plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, foods low in fats and carbohydrates, and what the doctor recommends will do the diabetic a world's good. Exercise also helps in a big way. Being physically inactive and overweight are also risk factors and that needs to be taken care of. Diabetes is passed on genetically as well. The doctor may prescribe medications which need to be taken on a regular, timely basis. All support should be given to a person diagnosed with diabetes as it crushes their self esteem and reason for living. Love, care and understanding are the key ingredients.
