Things to Do in the Mountain West
The Intermountain west is comprised of the states Mo.,Id.,Wy.,Co.,Nv.,Ut. Although all of these places are famous for their natural beauty there are a lot of aspects of this region that most people do not often tour but are definitely worthy of attention. If you have the desire and ability then visit these on your next trip..
1. Visit the Hot Springs- This geographic area has a large amount of thermic activity which has resulted in a many bathing hot pools in this region. These pools vary greatly in how much they have been developed and there is a pool to fit all types of tastes. For those that are like simplicity then White Sulfur Springs Hotel has the perfect spring and motel for you. Those that like more of a spa feel, check out some of the ones that Colorado has to offer.
2. Hunt for Pictographs- The archaic Native Americans of the Mountain west were very expressive, and a a lot of there 4000 year old art can remains even today, chipped into rock surfaces across the area. For a quick tour, Fremont State Park in Utah has a rewarding trail and interpretive center, for those that like hiking Grand Gulch in Utah is a great place to explore.
3. Tour the Smaller National Parks- If you have not been to Glacier, then certainly you should visit there first, but for those who have experienced the most popular parks in the region you could think about stopping by the underestimated ones. All together, this region has over 53 National sites, and most of the state have exemplarystate park systems as well.
4. Drop by the Small Town Museums (as well as the more famous ones)- Many of the best museums are those that are in the middle of nowhere, like the city museum in Three Forks, Montana in which the local people gathered paraphernalia from their area spanning a century and a half. Of course, some of the more famous museums are worth making a special trip for as well, such as the Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody just outside Yellowstone Park. This museum delves into western history for example Old Guns of the West or Modern Western Art.
5. Go Skiing- The Mountains are famous for its sunny weather, but we also have the best snow around. For those of you that are not interested in trying downhill skiing, you should consider x-country skiing. Sun Valley, Idaho has great trails an addiotion top pick is the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest in Montana.
6. Explore a Mountain Lake during the beautiful summer weather– The beautiful moutains of the western US are full of beautiful alpine lakes. A great many of these are well known but some of the most most interesting are off the main tourist track and often require a rewarding hike to get to. One of our favorite picks is Seneca Lake in the Wind River Mountains. This mountain lake is circled by steep ledges and jagged mountain peaks that were created by glacier ice. The Wind River mountains are known for fishing and hiking opportunities. Another spectacular lake in the Wind River Mountains is known as Lonsome Lake and is found in the Cirque of the Towers region in the southern half of the Wind River Mountains.
As you can see, there are a number of things that you should try to do in the mountain west, beyond the boringgroup tour. Any of the above iteneraies will not only take you to the heart of the true West but will provide you with many happy memories for years to come.
