Was synthetic cubism the result of wanting to find a process for an aim or just be experimenting with collag?
For example, did Picasso say "I want to create a tangible reality" and started working on synthesising different medias on one canvas, or did he just randomly start to put things together on a canvas and say "Hm... this is like a tangible reality..."?
By about 1910 the Cubist style was becoming very popular and almost fashionable. Picasso (who had originated the method with Braque in about 1907) was never an artist to stand still and was always searching for new ways of working. I think he also wished to be seen as Cubism's innovator rather than just one of the crowd. Synthetic Cubism was a means of progression and a way of introducing the "real" through the use of collage etc. Because Picasso always enjoyed playing with mundane objects and transforming them into art works I would have thought that Synthetic Cubism was mainly a conscious desire to create a new reality, although you have to allow for an element of chance.
A bit of both then, but more conscious thought than random experiment.
