Your Own Fantasy Portrait
Sometimes you will want a perfect gift for a much loved friend or partner, but can't decide what to buy them. Maybe you already have all the material things you both need. You may also want something really unique, which is a difficult task to accomplish. Engraving and embroidery can add a special touch, but doesn't make the item itself unique and special.
If you really want to show you have put a lot of thought and effort into pleasing the one you love it is much better to have something utterly unique created for them. The options available range from commissioning a set of cufflinks right up to building them a new home. A portrait is a great choice. A portrait is a unique way of capturing someone's spirit and personality in a form that can be passed down through generations to come. A portrait, however, is hardly a unique idea and it will be likely that you've seen such portraits adorning the walls of the homes of your friends and business associates. The question is how do you capture your loved one's personality yet end up with something really special and unique? This is where a good fantasy portrait artist can be priceless.
All of us have fantasies. We might imagine ourselves being alive in a different historical era, living an entirely different life, or perhaps even in a realm outside of our reality with metaphysical beings or fantastic creatures. It could be that we always wanted to meet someone - perhaps a figure who is long deceased of entirely fictional. Ancestry is a very popular theme for fantasy portraits and some individuals have themselves or a loved one pictured in a family group taking in ancestors from the previous century. You can encompass someone's entire life in a fantasy portrait - showing them with their children, the uniforms they wore, the planes they flew and the ships they sailed. Your loved one's achievements can be faithfully depicted. However, you might want to show your loved one with something they particularly love - wolves for example, wild horses or snow leopards. They could have a passion in life, like ornithology, fast cars or gun collecting. There is literally no end to what you could incorporate.
You first need to search for a fantasy artist whose work really appeals to you. There are any number of media that can be employed for your fantasy portrait, ranging from charcoal, through colored pencils, to watercolors, acrylics and oils. Digital art offers possibilities not available with conventional media. It is essential that you understand what your fantasy portrait artist needs from you and that you build a good relationship with them. A special relationship and bond can form that can last a lifetime and result in many more unique works of art and family heirlooms. Recipients in turn are often quite emotional as not only does such a gift prove you really care, but it can open up a window to their psyche in a way they have not before experienced.
You should take your time thinking of the themes your loved one would most like and how to incorporate them into their fantasy portrait. A pen and paper can be really valuable in this process as you can write down or sketch your thoughts and change and add to them as they evolve. You then embark on the creative process with your chosen artist, using these notes as a valuable guide. Some artists will insist on sittings, but others can work from good quality photographs of which you should be prepared to supply a dozen or more. For the best possible result and to avoid any misunderstandings, they will continue to involve you at the work at each stage, getting you to approve and sign off on changes as they are requested and made. Some media simply do not allow major changes late in the production of the piece. Whilst oils for example do permit the entire work to be changed, this will be as expensive and time consuming as creating a new work from scratch. Good communication can avoid this necessity. Other vital considerations are the lead time to allow for completion of the work, where it will be hung and how you will have it framed. There is no point in getting a huge portrait that they have nowhere to hang and a small portrait could well fit in a special place more easily.
I hope this has given you a lot to think about and has perhaps made it possible to find the special gift for the man or woman who has everything.
